Why home cooking matters

And why you should care

We live in an age in which we are expected to keep learning new skills. Whether its learning to use the latest gadgets, interfaces or upgrading our job skills. It has almost become second nature. Still the most basic skill many of us do not posess is that of cooking a proper meal. And I don't mean putting a supermarket home meal into the microwave. No, I'm talking about preparing all the ingredients and turning them into a healthy and tasting meal.

Developing cooking skills not only helps you to build healthy eating habits but also awareness and understanding of what you eat and where it comes from. Like they say, you are what you eat.

In general the skills you need are all of the cooking and food preparation knowledge and skills needed to prepare and provide regular, nutritious meals for yourself or your family. Knowing how to cook is knowing how to provide. Its a basic essential element of life. Cooking is survival. But there’s more.

How about passing on family tradition or staying close to your culture? How many times haven’t you heard someone say that there is no better cook than his or her mother? Or the best food comes from their homecountry or region or people? Keep those cultural roots alive by learning to cook those favourite meals yourself. Or start a tradition of passing on by writing down your cooking adventures in a notebook. Its easy to do and satisfying once your first notebook of recipes is finished. There is a sense of pride that comes with it.

A few other reasons why home cooking matters is discovering where certain food is grown. Finding out more about ethnic cuisines from around the world. Along the way you might even learn a thing or two about different cultures thrugh the food you cook. You might also improve your social skills when cooking together with others. Or turn your homecooking into a small gathering like you see at barbershops in certain cultures where everyone gathers around the barber for talks and discussions. Be that barber in your kitchen.

And finally, believe it or not, cooking is even beneficial for your small and large muscle control because of all the stirring and chopping you do.
