How eco friendly are pouch bags anyway?

We’re in the spice business. That means we are dependent on the quality of our beloved Mother Earth to grow the best possible spices. And since we are in it for the long run, we need to be aware of the materials we use and the effects they have on our planet. After all, you get out of it what you put in it so we want to take as little room in the landfill as possible. Not just for ourselves but for generations to come.

Fortunately pouch bags offer a great alternative to traditional packaging such as glass jars, paper boxes and tin cans by using 75% less material. Stand up pouches are made of 100 percent recyclable materials, that require less fuel to transport than lets say heavy glass jars, resulting in less carbon emissions.

Stand up pouches are made from durable, puncture-resistant layers of laminated film. The innovative structure of this flexible retail packaging lends to a longer shelf life and guarantees your product stays protected from outside moisture, oxygen, odor, UV light, and bacteria.

The pouches are also made of less material and thus causing less waste once disposed. And beacuse they can be flattened, the bags take up way less space in the landfill.

Now, I hear you say why don’t you have pouch bags with those little windows at the front so we can see whats inside. Bags with a window are nice to see but the light that falls on the herbs and spices is not conducive to shelf life. Herbs and spices thrive the best with as little direct light as possible.

One other advantage of our pouch bags is they are re-sealable. So you don’t need any plastic materials like clams and such to seal the bag after using it or extra material for storage. You just take out the amount of spices you need (usually 2-3 teaspoons for any dish) and re-seal the bag.

Now, back to the question we started with. Pouch bags are absolutely eco friendly. Are they recyclable? Yes! A stand up pouch made from kraft material is laminated to other layers of film and can be recycled. Are they biodegradable? No! For material to be biodegradable it needs to be able to break down when exposed to light and air. And you can feel it coming. One of the biggest advantages of kraft stand up pouches for product packaging is that the laminated layers of barrier film block out light and air. This extends the shelf life of food and protects it from spoiling or contact with harmful outside infections. In other words, it keeps the contents fresh.

But we are convinced that biodegradable kraft pouch bags will be the next step! And once they are, we will be all over it.
