The sound of Mitmita

If you have purchased our Mitmita spice blend you know its flavours. You probably have cooked with it and know its taste. But do you know how Mitmita sounds? That was a question I asked myself one day so I decided to put together a mixtape and celebrate the versatile flavors of Mitmita.

It was not an easy task, because the treasury of Ethiopian musical pearls is large. Very large. I had to shorten the time slot to make it a bit easier for myself.

In the end, I chose the 1970s, because I believe that this is the most influential period of Ethiopian fusion music. Especially internationally. With its biggest star artist Mulatu Astatke at the forefront of this genre, many Westeners learned to open their ears to its vibrant sounds. Ethiopian music was hot and put itself on the map. Although it wasn’t until the early 1990s Western record collectors jumped on it.

Without further ado, this is Mitmita, a tribute to the Ethiopian fusion sounds of the seventies. Enjoy these gems and masterpieces by Mulatu Astatke, Tesfa Maryam Kidane, Bahta Gebre Heywet, Girma Beyene, Issatu Tessema and more.
